The CEO leads an organization at the forefront of economic innovation and creative achievement, developing and implementing institutional strategies where programmatic advancement meets social impact. Reporting to the board of directors, the CEO serves as an ex-officio member in financial matters while advancing best practices in governance and policy making.
The successful CEO will clearly communicate the Create Birmingham identity, leverage new opportunities, deliver results that resonate in creative vibrancy and institutional resiliency, and engage in authentic community relationships with diverse constituencies.
Organization
Create Birmingham’s mission is to invest in economic development in the nonprofit and commercial creative sectors including performing arts, visual arts and crafts, culture and heritage, media and film, design, and culinary arts.
As the only nonprofit in the region exclusively devoted to the creative industries, it is Create Birmingham’s privilege to collaborate with individuals, businesses, and organizations to identify opportunities, overcome barriers, and strengthen communities.
Roles and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership: The CEO must have effective communication skills, experience in developing a strong organizational culture, and an ability to develop productive relationships. As the face of the organization, the CEO will seek opportunities for proactive engagement with government officials, funders, constituents, diverse community groups and other relevant stakeholders.
Business Acumen, Finances & Funding: The CEO must maintain a sound operational infrastructure and implement board-approved strategies and processes in support of optimal success.
The CEO is directly accountable for organizational financial soundness, making certain that internal and external resources are sufficient and well-managed.
Organizational Resiliency and Team Empowerment: The CEO is responsible for managing organizational structures and culture, staffing, HR processes, and digital platforms to ensure that the breadth and depth of services are in alignment with current and anticipated team workloads.
The CEO will provide the board of directors and funders with timely data that advances policy decisions and highlights program impacts.
Traits and Characteristics: The CEO will express a generosity of community spirit, coupled with a passionate commitment to entrepreneurs and artists. The individual will have sound social and leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, negotiate, conciliate, and take initiative.
Resolute and imaginative, the CEO will have the ability to think tactically, conceptualize creatively, and analyze diagnostically.
Qualifications:
The ideal CEO candidate will have at least 7-years of progressive senior management experience in organizations known for innovation and resourcefulness.
Deep involvement with the creative industries and a network to Birmingham’s
creative community is needed. Exemplary speaking, writing, budgeting and public presentation skills are required.
Demonstrable experience growing philanthropic and earned revenues, as well as federal grant management, is required. Excellent people management skills and experience implementing best practice HR policies is required.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Compensation and Benefits: Create Birmingham provides an equitable and competitive compensation package that includes:
Salary range of $100,000 - $115,000/year commensurate with experience
Health and dental insurance provided by the organization
Retirement plan with six percent matching contributions
Hybrid work schedule, generous vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays
