Director of People and Culture Remote | Preference for Indianapolis-based candidates Full-Time | Exempt | Reports to the CEO
Transform the Employee Experience. Build a People-First Future.
Sigma Nursing, the global honor society for nursing excellence, is writing its next chapter—and people are at the heart of the story. As we prepare to launch a bold new strategic plan, we’re investing in culture, modernizing our infrastructure, and designing the employee experience of the future. That’s where you come in.
As our next Director of People and Culture, you won’t just manage HR—you’ll lead a full transformation of our people strategy. This is your opportunity to partner directly with the CEO and executive leadership to redesign how we engage, support, and develop our remote, high-performing team. You’ll build trust, evolve systems, strengthen culture, and reimagine what it means to work at Sigma. With full authority to shape your function and team, you’ll bring big ideas to life and create lasting impact across a mission-driven, international nonprofit.
A Day in the Life
Every day in this role is different—and that’s exactly how you like it. You start your morning reviewing insights from our recent engagement survey, drafting recommendations for executive review. Mid-morning, you’re leading a strategy session with the CARE Team, reimagining how recognition and employee well-being are experienced across Sigma. Later, you join a Director Advisory Council meeting to align on talent development priorities, then shift gears to review compliance updates for our multi-state operations (IN, KY, CO, NC, and beyond). Whether leading a performance management overhaul, launching an RFP for an innovative EAP offering, or supporting a colleague through an ADA accommodation, you lead with clarity, empathy, and strategic insight. You’re not just building policies—you’re shaping a culture of ownership, equity, and growth.
You Would Thrive in This Role If...
You’re a culture builder. You believe HR is more than policies—it’s about creating spaces where people belong, grow, and thrive.
You’re a strategist and a doer. You’re excited to design the big picture—and you’re just as energized to roll up your sleeves and make it happen.
You lead with people-first values. You see every policy, process, and program as an opportunity to care for people and advance the mission.
You’re confident in compliance. With experience across multi-state HR operations, FMLA, ADA, and ever-evolving best practices, you ensure Sigma is always a step ahead.
You’re agile and resolute. You can pivot quickly, manage change gracefully, and guide others through ambiguity. You don’t need hand-holding—you create the path.
You thrive in remote settings. You understand the nuances of virtual engagement and know how to foster connection across a distributed team.
You’ve led during transformation. Whether from a nonprofit, association, or purpose-driven organization, you know what it takes to evolve systems, shift culture, and lead through change.
Bonus points if you have:
SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent HR certification
Experience participating in or leading DEI and leadership development initiatives
Familiarity with nonprofit or association work environments
Connections to the HR community through SHRM or other professional networks
Why Sigma?
At Sigma Nursing, we’re committed to advancing nursing excellence—and that same commitment drives how we care for our team. As our next Director of People and Culture, you’ll step into a leadership role where compliance, culture, and innovation intersect. We offer:
Outstanding benefits– including HSA contributions, generous PTO, retirement match, and comprehensive health coverage
A fully remote role – with a preference for Indianapolis-based candidates and flexibility that supports work-life integration
The chance to lead transformation – partnering with executive leadership to modernize HR systems, ensure compliance across multiple states, and shape a thriving remote-first culture
Growth potential– as a key advisor to the CEO, you’ll shape organization-wide strategy and build a next-generation People function
Work-life balance perks – like summer half-day Fridays and a fully paid end-of-year holiday break
Additional Details:
This is a fully remote position with occasional in-person presence requested—typically aligning with monthly CEO visits to our Indianapolis office. Please note that this is not an entry-level opportunity. We’re seeking a seasoned HR professional withseveral years of experience who is confident and energized by leading as a department of one. If you thrive in an autonomous, strategic role where you can make a meaningful, organization-wide impact, we’d love to hear from you.
