AAN Goals
The strategic plan includes the following four goals and objectives.
Grow a Diverse Neurology Workforce
The AAN will promote optimum health care to people with neurological disease and grow the number of neurology clinicians as well as practitioners underrepresented in neurology. We will also continue to expand the care team by providing support for advanced practice providers trained in neurology and partnering with primary care providers and other members of the care team. The AAN supports the entire neurologist-led care team to provide patients with the highest quality care and neurological health.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
Increasing number of practicing neurologists
Increasing number of US neurologist members who are underrepresented in neurology (UIN)
Increasing international membership
Increasing non-neurologist membership
Strengthen Neurological Practice
The AAN will strengthen the viability of neurological practice by improving patient access and adherence to care, improving career fulfillment, reducing administrative burden, and ensuring that neurologists are fairly valued in the health care environment. Neurologists will serve as leaders of the care team to ensure that we improve the care and brain health of our patients. The AAN will ensure neurologists have access to the right resources to serve their patients and continue to promote the value of the neurologist-led care team.

Increasing neurologist compensation
Reducing administrative burdens
Decreasing burnout
Increasing access to neurological care
Increasing member use of quality resources
Promote Neuroscience Research
The AAN will strengthen support for neuroscience research across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and population implementation science. The AAN will support research and researchers as the keys to better diagnosis, life-saving therapies and treatments, cures, and the elimination of health care disparities, as well as a future free of brain disease for all.
We'll accomplish this goal by:
Increasing NIH funding
Increasing AAN research awards
Increasing the number of practices participating in clinical trials
Expanding UIN member involvement in AAN research programs
Improve Neurological Health
The AAN will provide leadership, convene experts, and guide collaborations in identifying strategies for preventing, slowing, and eliminating neurological disease. The AAN will work to improve overall neurological health and quality of life for all people through unparalleled lifelong education, quality improvement, scientific discovery, effective therapies, and optimizing brain health.

Purpose of the Position The American Academy of Neurology seeks an educational leader with the passion, skills, and qualifications to successfully lead and coalesce it’s member education strategy. This is an incredible time in the AAN’s history to capitalize on new strategy to further build, engage, and create significant impact.
The Deputy Chief, Education reports directly to and partners closely with the Chief Strategy and Programs Officer in providing strategic direction, leadership and vision for education, conferences and leadership programs and assumes an acting leadership role for their team in the absence of the executive leader. This position develops programs and services across member/non-member career stages that coincide with AAN strategic goals.
The Deputy Chief, Education will focus on adult learning theory and designing and implementing diverse educational modalities. This role will closely collaborate and engage across the entire organization within a highly responsive and service-oriented environment with incredible institutional commitment to providing value for members. Working within a new strategic plan, The Deputy Chief, Education will frame a new educational vision to create a living, evolving strategy and will look to drive innovation and improve synergies across different educational programs and offerings.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership
Work with the Chief Strategy and Programs Officer to set the strategic direction for medical education and assess educational needs that drive the organization’s mission and overall strategic plan.
Oversee day-to-day operations of team, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of all programs.
Lead initiatives that ensure programs run smoothly and effectively. This includes fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the organization.
Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure programs and initiatives align with organizational goals and strategic priorities, ensuring they align with improvement of neurologic practice environments.
Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, fostering an effective sense of community among members.
Collaborate with the Education Committee Chair to set and oversee the strategy for AAN’s educational offerings.
Responds to highly escalated and sensitive member feedback and offers the highest-level service.
Program Oversight
Set strategy for products and services that enhance AAN’s leadership in neurologic education.
Develop a comprehensive lifelong education strategy for neurologists, domestically and internationally.
Conduct market research and feasibility studies to assess opportunities for new education programs that align with AAN strategic goals.
Innovate and create diverse, inclusive educational products and services.
Ensures Academy adherence to appropriate ACCME and AMA accreditation guidelines for CME programming, educational publications, and enduring materials.
Ensures educational products deliver a world-class member experience in line with AAN standards.
Develop high-quality educational programs using state-of-the-art adult learning methodologies and technologies.
Lead the design and implementation of evidence-based educational activities and evaluation methods to assess instructional effectiveness, learning outcomes, and their impact on competence, performance, and patient outcomes.
Oversees the planning, development and execution of the AAN’s member Leadership Programs and activities of the Academy.
Ensures effective Leadership Programming, including periodic program assessment with special emphasis on evaluation and outcome measures
Oversees strategic aspects of the Annual Meeting and regional conferences, including site selection, contract negotiation and fulfillment, education and scientific programs, registration, faculty recruitment and development
Financial Oversight
Develop and manage the department budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to meet strategic objectives and identify opportunities to optimize expenditures.
Deliver significant value and financial return on educational products and services to meet the needs of members and other stakeholders.
Team Leadership
Position is responsible for direct employee supervision which includes the selection, training, performance management, compensation administration, and termination of employees.
Conduct regular assessments and implement professional development to enhance the education team's skills, ensuring the creation and delivery of innovative, high-quality programs.
The Candidate The successful candidate will bring passion, enthusiasm and priority for the AAN mission and members. The Deputy Chief, Education must align educational services and offerings with member need to increase and promote value. This role will focus on cohesive educational strategies to enhance member engagement, recruitment and retention, and should have comparable educational strategy leadership experience in an organization of similar or larger size and complexity.
The Deputy Chief, Education will be a very strong culture builder, stellar communicator, strategic thinker, and a proven leader who will articulate a vision that others embrace and follow.

Experience and Professional Qualifications Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of experience in the management and administration of education programs, including curriculum development for adult learners is required
Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience, proven track record of leading a service-oriented team working with members, volunteer leaders and committees and leading through leaders of teams.
Proven experience in developing and executing strategic plans, with a strong ability to align educational programs with organizational goals and drive measurable outcomes is required.
Extensive experience in the full product development lifecycle, including ideation, design, implementation, and ROI evaluation of educational programs and services for synchronous and asynchronous models required.
Demonstrated background in financial modeling and data analytics, with the ability to assess and optimize budget allocation, forecast program costs, and measure financial performance of educational initiatives is required.
Demonstrated experience working closely with physician leaders to design and implement education programs that meet both clinical and operational needs required
Previous experience with a medical association or nonprofit is preferred
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of topics that may lead to educational products or informational content for use by members, such as quality improvement, high-value care, registries, clinical guidelines, performance measures, and patient education and engagement required.
Knowledge of development and application process for CME, certification, and maintenance of certification (MOC) required.
Extensive Leadership skills, including visioning, strategic planning, employee motivation, performance appraisal and conflict resolution are required
Exceptional interpersonal skills, communication skills (both written and spoken communication), negotiation, conflict management and team- building/effectiveness skills are required
Strong skills in office productivity tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required
Detail-oriented leader, able to demonstrate innovation and initiative, good judgment, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment is required
Knowledge of learning management systems is preferred
Knowledge of medical education training is preferred
Knowledge of online education is preferred
Knowledge of adult learning methodology is preferred
Travel Requirements:
Some travel required – approximately 15%. Ability to legally travel outside of the United States, particularly but not limited to Canada.
Schedule:
Occasional evenings and weekends required

Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Communication, Liberal Arts or related field is required
Master’s Degree is preferred
