The American Sociological Association (ASA) invites applications for the position of Deputy Executive Director. During this critical period for the discipline of sociology, and for higher education more broadly, the ASA Deputy Executive Director will work with the Executive Director to ensure the association’s strategic effectiveness, operational and financial stability, and programmatic growth in support of sociologists working in academia and across the scientific workforce. The Deputy Executive Director serves as staff leader in the Executive Director’s absence and is an essential member of the association leadership team.
ASA has a membership of 9,000 sociologists who are scholars, teachers, and practitioners. Its mission is to serve sociologists in their work, advance sociology as a discipline and profession, and promote the contributions and use of sociology to society. ASA is incorporated in Washington, D.C., but staff works 100% remotely. Some travel is required.
Essential Functions:
Assist the Executive Director in developing and executing the organization's strategic plan.
Oversee the implementation of key strategic initiatives and monitor progress toward goals.
Identify opportunities for growth and expansion within the organization.
Proactively identify internal opportunities and challenges and work with the Executive Director to address them.
Lead association fundraising efforts, including identifying, cultivating, and securing new donations in support of the association’s strategic initiatives.
Manage relations and communications with new and existing donors, ensuring that obligations to them are fulfilled and funding continues for future years.
Oversee grant writing and reporting processes.
Review operations of designated departments, ensuring efficient and effective performance.
Supervise and develop relevant staff members, including performance reviews and mentoring.
Evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs and identify areas for improvement.
Oversee the development and implementation of new programs aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.
Cultivate, build, and maintain relationships and partnerships with members, volunteer leadership, and others to further the organization’s mission.
Represent the organization at external events and conferences.
Liaise with relevant committees and task forces.
Manage additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.
Reporting Structure: The Deputy Executive Director reports to the Executive Director and has supervisory responsibility for staff as assigned by the Executive Director.

PhD or other advanced degree.
At least seven years of extensively proven leadership, management, and administrative experience in an organizational setting.
Demonstrated expertise in organizational advancement, including fundraising and grant writing and administration.
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with members and external partners.
Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and financial resources.
Strong strategic planning and analytical skills.
A history of supporting academics in teaching and learning, research, practice, and professional development across a broad range of employment sectors and institutions.
Expertise in managing relevant program areas and operations and commitment to advancing organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Exemplary writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and direct simultaneous initiatives across a broad portfolio.
Organizational savvy, ability to work independently and collaborate with teams, excellent interpersonal skills.
