This position is full-time, exempt with a salary of $90,000 per year. The Controller is based in the U.S., works 100% remotely, and travels annually to attend our team meetings and/or Annual Conference.

NIRSA, a leader in higher education and the advocate for the advancement of recreation, sport, and wellbeing, is looking for a Controller to provide strategic and tactical administration of the accounting and finance functions for our Association and related entities.
Our Controller reports to the Executive Director and is a contributing member of our Leadership Team. You will also supervise two direct reports and prioritize goals, foster teamwork, and provide ongoing coaching to enhance efficiency, collaboration, and staff performance.
Key responsibilities:
Oversee monthly close of financial records, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
Lead preparation and review of annual operating budgets and manage cash flow for NIRSA, NIRSA Foundation, and NIRSA Services Corporation.
Lead annual review and 990 preparation process with external auditors.
Manage external banking and investment relationships.
Oversee payroll processing and related tax payments in twelve states with payroll service provider.
Coordinate annual review of 401k plan and all required compliance reporting.
Ensure adequate internal controls by maintaining documentation of accounting and finance policies and procedures.
Manage risk which includes making recommendations on types and levels of insurance needed and reviewing contracts.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field and five years of controller-level experience (or equivalent experience). CPA preferred.

Other requirements:
Two years of supervisory experience
Proven track record of working effectively with accounting and non-accounting personnel
Experience working with Boards and finance committees
Experience with financial statement preparation, forecasting, and cash flow monitoring
Experience with budget development, monitoring, and reporting
Strong computer skills, including competence with Microsoft Office and above average excel skills.
Prior experience effectively using complex accounting software systems.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including presentation of financial results to Boards, finance committees, staff.
Must be able to manage time well to complete assignments in an all-remote environment with multiple tasks and demands.
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and volunteers. Must be able to work in a team environment and produce results in cooperation with fellow team members.
