Endocrinologists are at the core of solving the most pressing health problems of our time, from diabetes and obesity to infertility, bone health, and hormone-related cancers. The Endocrine Society is the world’s oldest and largest organization of scientists devoted to hormone research and physicians who care for people with hormone-related conditions. The Endocrine Society, based in Washington DC, seeks an experienced Executive Editor and publishing professional with a PhD or equivalent in the biomedical sciences and a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in STM journal editorial and publishing operations to manage four of the currently five journals of the Endocrine Society, covering basic research, clinical research, and clinical practice, collectively publishing more than 1,300 articles a year.
This is a full-time position in the Society’s Publications Department, requiring a critical and innovative thinker, with broad knowledge of science and medicine, experience working with the biomedical community, superlative communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, able to work on a highly valuable Society asset in a demanding, fast-paced, and detail-oriented environment. Reporting to the Chief Publications Officer, the Executive Editor works with other staff in the department, including the Director of Publishing Operations and the Director of Publishing Analytics, as well as external service providers and the Society’s contracted publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP), to grow the Journals’ impact and performance while providing editorial, author acquisition, and content development support for the Society’s members appointed to serve as the Journals’ Editors-in-Chief, Deputy Editors, and Associate Editors.
What you’ll bring to the job:
PhD or equivalent in the biomedical sciences; experience as an editor and published author a plus, especially in an endocrinology-related field
Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in STM journal editorial and publishing operations, working with editors-in-chief and editorial boards
A critical and innovative thinker, with superlative communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, able to work on a highly valuable Society asset in a demanding, fast-paced, and detail-oriented environment
Knowledge of STM publishing models and approaches
Familiarity with the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors
Knowledge of manuscript submission systems; the Journals use Editorial Manager
Broad knowledge of science and medicine, experience working with the scientific/medical community
Demonstrated success in acting strategically and innovatively with respect to content acquisition as well as business development
Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with Publications Department staff as well as with Marketing/Communications, Finance, other Society departments, vendors, and contractors
SharePoint knowledge and advanced experience with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel – including pivot tables – Power BI
Ability to learn new technology as required
Occasional travel required

What you’ll own:
Represent the Society’s publishing interests and strategies as the primary staff support for the Journals’ Editors-in-Chief, Deputy Editors, Associate Editors, and Statistical Reviewer Board
Oversee publishing activities related to the development, focus, growth, and impact of the Journals with the Journals’ editors, the Society’s members, and global author markets to attract high-quality submissions
Serve as a key member of the Society’s Publications staff in collaborative work with the Society’s publisher, OUP, and the Society’s Publications Committee
Work with peer review, copyediting, production, marketing, and communications staff to attract and publish high quality, relevant, and timely articles
Coordinate with publishing analytics staff, OUP, and vendor services to compile data for publishing strategies and reports
Participate in the building of articles calendars and articles collections
Monitor initiatives and practices in STM publishing and recommend actions for the Journals to remain competitive and effective while in compliance with research integrity and ethics standards including those of the Committee on Publication Ethics and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, including guarding against plagiarism, image manipulation, paper mills and other fraudulent submissions.
In consultation with the Journals’ Editors-in-Chief: oversee Reject Without Review decisions; adjudicate allegations of misconduct by authors; corrections; retractions
Manage an external contracted Desk Editor, for author acquisition and screening submissions, including Out of Scope
Oversee transfer processes for manuscripts between the Journals
Bring to the Journals a sophisticated understanding of author and reader technologies and services to attract submissions, improve discoverability, and drive usage and revenues
Champion the Journals in their development of business opportunities and scientific content; collaborate with others at the Society and OUP to strategize on new journal launches
Represent the Journals and the Society at industry and academic events, and with external stakeholders and policy makers
Lead the planning of Journals sessions at the Society’s Annual Meeting, ENDO

This position is located in Washington, DC and walking distance to Metro and major bus lines. The Endocrine Society offers a flexible, hybrid work environment.
