The American Physiological Society (APS) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager to join our team and ensure that our publication practices meet the highest ethical standards. The candidate will promote a culture of scientific integrity at APS Publications. In addition, this candidate will help guide the growth and development of our partnered publications. The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter with attention to detail and the ability to make well-reasoned decisions, build strong relationships and influence diverse stakeholders and communities to further the mission of APS Publications.

1. Ethics Manager Duties (70% of time): • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager facilitates the proper detection, assessment, and resolution of publication ethics and art review cases across APS journals in an organized, timely, and efficient manner. These activities will be performed in collaboration with the Director of Publishing, Program Development, Policy & Ethics. The person in this role assesses incoming ethics queries from both internal (i.e., editors, art staff, managing editors, etc.) and external sources (i.e., readers, PubPeer, etc.), develops an action plan for review with the supervisor, and then takes the appropriate steps to ensure a fair and timely resolution following industry standards and best practices. • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager provides guidance and support to authors, reviewers, editors, and APS staff on ethical and research integrity matters. The person in this role will remain up to date on current best practices, in terms of ethical principles, guidelines, and policies related to scientific publications, to ensure that APS practices are in accordance with industry standards, such as Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE) and National Information Standards Organization (NISO). When needed, this person will evaluate our current ethics-related processes and suggest improvements for consideration and possible implementation. • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager monitors ethics cases from their origin to final outcome. The person in this role will liaise with peer review and production staff to facilitate the proper publication of corrigenda and retractions resulting from ethics cases. In addition, this person maintains comprehensive records and develops and manages a robust system for tracking ethical issues, including all communications, their statuses and resolution when closed. This person will report on ethics-related trends, issues, and improvements annually for reporting at the editors’ meeting and our internal annual report. • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager will undertake additional activities in the ethics department as determined by the needs of the organization, ranging from policy development to training & education for authors, reviewers, and editors. The person in this role will stay updated on emerging trends and developments in ethics-related policies (e.g., papermills, artificial intelligence, etc.) and, in consultation with the Director of Publishing, Program Development, Policy & Ethics, bring to APS leadership for consideration. In addition, the person in this role is responsible for creating education and training content on publication ethics that may be presented at meetings throughout the year and available for on-demand training, as needed.
2. Partner Publishing Manager Duties (30% of time): • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager, in collaboration with the Director of Publishing, Program Development, Policy & Ethics, contributes to the development and growth of our partner publications (Comprehensive Physiology, Function, and Physiological Reports) and continually strives to raise the profile of the journals within the scientific community. The person in this role works closely with the partner publishing offices, including Oxford University Press and Wiley, and APS colleagues on initiatives to support the Editors in recruiting high-quality content from leading experts, increasing visibility of the journal in the scientific community, and maintaining the well-recognized APS brand. • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager integrates strategic thinking, demonstrates creativity, and effectively communicates new ideas. The person in this role collaborates with the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, and partner publishing team, while confidently demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the peer review and production processes to deliver a best-in-class professional experience. As a publishing expert, the Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager works to develop the reputation of our partner publications in the market and to ensure the ongoing competitive position of the journals. • The Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager will undertake support tasks, ranging from organizing and scheduling journal meetings to drafting and sending correspondence on behalf of Editors. The person in this role will also request monthly journal performance metrics from the partner publishers to assess how the journal is performing in relation to other journals in the APS portfolio and outside competitors. Additionally, the person in this role collaborates with the marketing department and curates social media and short podcasts for the journals, including writing content for multiple social media platforms and reporting on social media analytics. Additional activities undertaken by the person in this role include occasional travel to in-person (1-2 times/year) and virtual events, development of presentations and reports, handling Associate Editor onboarding and training, and recruitment of new Editorials Board Members in consultation with Editors. Additionally, the Ethics and Partner Publishing Manager manages special projects and initiatives, such as early career journal opportunities.
Skills/Abilities
1. Knowledge of life and biomedical sciences is highly desired 2. Awareness and understanding of scholarly publishing 3. Excellent oral and written communications skills for both scientific and lay audiences, including presentation and collaboration skills 4. Strong multitasking and organizational skills to balance both day-to-day deliverables and long-term goals/projects 5. Excellent prioritization and time management skills to meet tight deadlines while collaborating with cross-functional teams 6. Knowledge of editorial and scientific peer review best practices 7. High computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products 8. Strong data analysis skills 9. Motivated and achievement oriented 10. Understanding of publication ethics and research integrity 11. Knowledge of guidelines and best practices from organizations like COPE and NISO is desirable

Where will you work? We are a remote-first organization. We do have office space and there will be times when an in-person division meeting or staff meeting will be held at the office. Some staff work in the office 2 – 3 times per week, others come in once a month. The key is to identify with supervisors what works best for staff to produce the best outcomes.
The APS office is based in Rockville, MD (Washington DC metro area) and preference will be given to candidates from this area.

Education and Experience
