USAging is the national association representing and supporting the network of Area Agencies on Aging and advocating for the Title VI Native American Aging Programs. Our members help older adults and people with disabilities throughout the United States live with optimal health, well-being, independence and dignity in their homes and communities.
As the local leaders on aging well at home our members develop, coordinate and deliver a wide range of home and community-based services, including information and referral/assistance, case management, home-delivered and congregate meals, in-home services, caregiver supports, transportation, evidence-based health and wellness programs, long-term care ombudsman programs and more.

Position Overview
The Communications Assistant will help to implement communications strategies and tactics that align with USAging’s goals and objectives. The ideal candidate is a passionate communicator with excellent writing skills and social media expertise who has an interest in supporting the ability of older adults and people with disabilities to continue living in the community. Candidates should have strong editing and time management skills and be detail-oriented, forward-thinking and able to juggle multiple projects daily.
Job Title: Communications Assistant
Reports To: Director, Communications
Duties and Responsibilities
Work as part of the Communications Team to develop engaging, shareable content to mobilize audiences around USAging’s priorities.
Attend regular discussions with USAging teams to assess marketing needs and to develop corresponding content.
Become familiar with the organizational branding guidelines and, along with the rest of the Communications team, ensure these are followed in all communications that the Assistant touches.
Work closely with the Digital Marketing and Communications Manager to:
Assist with the development and implementation of strategies to raise USAging’s visibility and thought leadership through growing followers and engagement on USAging’s social media channels.
Proactively seek to understand social media platforms and emerging digital trends, particularly around industry best practices to amplify campaigns and to find new ways to reach our audiences.
Assist with the development and implementation of digital campaigns to engage audiences and drive action, including Google Ads and paid social media.
Collect, analyze and develop metrics for monthly reporting on social media, website and other communications to inform and optimize USAging’s communications strategy.
Monitor and respond to DMs received on USAging’s various social media channels.
Work closely with the Communications Director to:
Assist with the development of a variety of materials, which may include newsletter articles, social media posts, blog post entries, toolkits and more.
Support USAging Communications Team by making website content updates, assisting with copy editing and proofreading, as well as capturing video and photos at events as needed.
Contribute to the development of the association’s robust editorial calendar.
Offer programs support with setting up and running webinars, including arranging for Closed Captioning (CART)/ASL services as needed.
Monitor USAging inboxes, including info, comms, social media, webinars and orders, to ensure timely responses.
Work Hours and Location
This full-time position is based in USAging’s Washington, DC, office. USAging staff work a hybrid schedule, with two days (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) a week in the office. The successful candidate will also be able to occasionally travel to member conferences and always attend the USAging Annual Conference and Tradeshow each summer for up to six days.

Bachelor’s degree required; preference will be given to candidates with credentials in English, communications, public relations or related fields.
One to three years of experience working in communications, preferably full-time paid work with nonprofit organizations.
Excellent oral and written communications skills (a writing test may be given).
Ability to consistently apply the association’s voice and style while using varied writing styles depending on audience and medium.
Proven ability to meet goals amid competing priorities and tight deadlines.
Ability to work independently, with limited supervision, if needed.
Well-developed interpersonal skills that will further enhance a work environment that is collegial and creative.
Proficiency with email marketing, social media planning, reporting and graphics tools such as Constant Contact, Hootsuite, Canva, Google Analytics, Google Ads and Google Data Studio is a plus.
Must have an all-hands-on-deck attitude and a willingness to pitch in when needed.
