SMACNA is seeking an experienced Executive Director of Meetings and Events to lead the organization in planning and directing all meetings and event functions for the association. Reporting directly to the CEO, the ideal candidate will lead the department in coordinating meeting specifications with staff, negotiating contracts with hotels and other event vendors for committee meetings, convention, tradeshow, educational conferences, and jointly sponsored conferences with affiliated organizations. The candidate will work with hotel staff in securing functional space requirements and appropriate audio-visual needs. Key responsibilities include planning, administering, executing and managing high-touch meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, including social events, creating our meetings strategy and assisting with the expansion of our education programing. The candidate will travel on-site to manage meetings and ensure smooth delivery of events. In addition, the candidate will conduct site visits. Budgeting and appropriating adequate funds for each event, and managing financial aspects of each meeting are required, to ensure that budget targets are met. The candidate will supervise a staff of two. SMACNA expects the department to grow in the next few years.
Qualifications and skills
Bachelor’s degree in business, event management, communications or related field.
Minimum 7 years’ experience in association meetings management.
Professional Meeting Planner certification desired.
Ability to collaborate with various teams.
Ability to manage multiple meetings at once and be able to handle changing conditions in a fast-paced environment, working productively through busy times;
Ability to maintain positive working relationships with national hotel representatives.
Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
Ability to use tech solutions in meeting planning, including Monday.com and meeting management applications.
Ability to use MS Office tools.
Requires travel approximately 40%
Requires work in the office 3 days per week or more. Telework option up to 2 days per week.
DMV area candidates preferred, however for the right candidate we will consider other locations.
