Basic function: The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) will serve as Editor, Radiology. The Editor is responsible for encouraging submissions of scientific manuscripts, for setting high standards of scientific integrity, for developing guidelines and mechanisms for peer review of submitted manuscripts, for release of accepted manuscripts on a timely basis for publication, and for formulating and interpreting editorial philosophy and policies for Radiology. The EIC will also oversee the publication of RSNA Journals, collaborating with the AED, the Publications Council Chair, and the Board Liaison for Publications. The EIC will uphold and defer to the editorial independence of each RSNA Journal Editorial Board.
Term: Maximum term is 10 years; Initial term is 5 years, which may be extended upon mutual agreement.
Specific Responsibilities:
Editor, Radiology:
The EIC serves as the Editor of Radiology ensuring efficient, transparent, and accurate peer-review and editorial assessment of all original research manuscripts submitted to Radiology. The EIC has final responsibility in the selection, revision, and rejection of proffered manuscripts submitted to Radiology and sets the editorial procedures for the evaluation of manuscripts through the Radiology’s peer review system.
The Editor is responsible for all scholarly and non-scholarly content published in, or in connection with, Radiology including: the accuracy and veracity of the scientific and academic content of Radiology and the scientific credibility of manuscripts accepted for publication in Radiology, including ensuring that any such research has been conducted in accordance with industry standard methodology and practice and has complied in full with all applicable guidelines and ethical standards.
The Editor reviews and advises on any conflict(s) of interest declared by any author or member of the Editorial Board of Radiology and shall liaise with the AED as to any further action which may be required.
The Editor is responsible for the maintenance of scientific standards of Radiology that encourage technical quality, research integrity and rigor of methodology over perceived novelty.
The Editor nominates Radiology editorial board members for approval by the Board within the budget allocated by the Board.
The Editor uses their attendance at scientific conferences as an opportunity to solicit submissions for Radiology.
The Editor fulfills other responsibilities as outlined in an editorial agreement with the society.
RSNA Journals:
With the AED, the EIC adheres to the distinction between editorial and publisher responsibilities as defined by the ICMJE and WAME.
With the AED and Publications Council Chair, the EIC upholds editorial independence for the individual RSNA Journals.
The EIC establishes regular communication with the RSNA Journal Editors and fosters a culture of shared responsibility and accountability among editors, editorial board members, and the publications team. The EIC meets regularly with RSNA Journal Editors, serving as a point of contact for the Journal Editors, the Publications Council Chair, the AED, and the RSNA Board Publications liaison.
In situations of real or perceived competing priorities between RSNA Journals, the EIC defers to the Publications Council Chair, BOD liaison, and AED.
The EIC collaborates with the publications team and RSNA Journals Editors to develop a 3-5 year editorial strategic plan for the journal portfolio including annual objectives and metrics of success for review by the Publications Council.
The EIC works with RSNA Journal Editors to develop strategies to encourage global manuscript submissions, enhance the journal portfolio by ensuring a positive author, reviewer, and editor experience for transferred manuscripts, and advance research in imaging.
The EIC works with RSNA Journal Editors, RSNA staff, and the publications team to submit new ideas for the portfolio of journals that will affect budget during the established yearly budgeting period. The EIC ensures RSNA Journals adhere to established fiscal policies and yearly budget.
The EIC collaborates with RSNA staff and the publications team to prioritize online, workflow, communication, and content format innovations across the portfolio of journals within the budget allocated.
The EIC convenes the RSNA Journal Editors during the Society's annual meeting and ad other times when necessary to review policies and procedures.
The EIC collaborates with the other Editors, the Publications Council Chair, and the AED to set and maintain shared editorial policies, adhering to the recommendations of the ICMJE and COPE.
Ambassador:
The EIC acts as an ambassador to promote the best interests of RSNA Journals and the Society and its outreach, which may include representing the Journals or Society through visits to radiology departments, at scientific conferences, and by cooperative planning with RSNA staff for engaging with the media, digital communications, and social media.
The EIC submits and presents an RSNA Journals annual report to the Board of Directors.
The EIC participates in the RSNA Visiting Editors Program, Editorial Fellowships, Editors’ Forum, and policy coordination deliberations of the RSNA Journal Editors.
The EIC attends the meetings of the Publications Council and other RSNA committees as directed.
Qualifications:
Membership: Preference will be given to candidates who have previously engaged as members of the Society.
Publishing experience: The EIC shall have a significant record of authorship of scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Publishing experience also includes having served as a reviewer, editor, publication manager, and/or science communicator. Preference will be given to candidates who have previously served as associate editors or editor for one or more journals in the field of radiology or imaging science.
Education: The EIC will possess a graduate degree (MD or PhD) with expertise in radiology or medical imaging science (such as medical physics), as well as a broad-based understanding of the field of radiology, including general familiarity with the subspecialties represented in the Journals’ submissions and publishing output.
Professional Network: The EIC will have an established network spanning academia, industry, and private practice within the professional field of radiology.
Strategic and Collaborative Mindset: The EIC will demonstrate the ability to coordinate with RSNA’s leaders, including the RSNA Board, CEO, journal editors, and the publications team to communicate vision and map strategies for achieving RSNA Journal’s future successes. The EIC will have experience collaborating with stakeholders at all levels, responding to opportunities and challenges, and developing opportunities for growth in submissions, citations, and readership.
Judgement, Professionalism, and Accountability: The EIC must possess solid and sound judgment skills and the willingness to be held accountable for the editorial decisions rendered through the publishing process. The EIC must be able to uphold the reputation of RSNA Journals, the ethical guidelines for scholarly publishing,and the rigors and timelines of scientific publishing practices with diplomacy and professionalism. Preference will be given to candidates with established leadership experience in an editorial or academic setting. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work within an established budget.
Internal Relationships:
The EIC works with the AED, CEO, publications and communications teams, other RSNA committee chairs, and RSNA Journals Editors.
External Relationships:
The EIC works with the public and members of the radiologic community related to the Journal.
