Enameling, the fusion of glass to metal, is a rare and difficult medium, but one which has great fascination for the viewer. The Enamelist Society, Inc. (TES) is an organization that was founded in 1987 has continued working to educate and foster change in people’s knowledge and understanding of the medium. TES, a 501 (c) 3 professional society, is well recognized internationally and about 9% of its membership is from other nations.
Our primary purpose is to promote the art of enameling, to educate the public and members about enameling and to encourage cooperation and discussion among individuals involved with any aspect of enameling. That purpose has been realized by holding a biennial Conference where enamelists come together to take workshops, learn new techniques in the medium, and to interact with each other to create community and disseminate information. Many enamel artists work alone, and place tremendous value on the community that is created by attending the Conference and workshops.
Simultaneously, an International Juried Exhibition and an International Juried Student Exhibition have been held in conjunction with each Conference. A catalog has been produced to... accompany the exhibits and to create a lasting record of the juried works that were selected for inclusion. Commencing in 2011 TES began traveling the exhibitions to different venues; a practice that continues today.
The Society also publishes a quarterly Newsletter to share additional information on enameling, enamelists and enameling events. It contains a feature article on a renowned enamelist, technical articles on enameling, review of enameling events, a listing of exhibitions, classes and workshops. The newsletter has international distribution. Since 2019, again in response to a strategic planning meeting and member input, we added FUSENEWS to our roster of information disseminated to the field. It is a monthly email offering that keeps members up to date on TES happenings, featured members, processes, enamel exhibitions, etc.
Responding to the COVID quarantines in 2020, we added a weekly Zoom event that we call Tuesday Team Talks, and they continue to 2025 although they are no longer weekly. We have 60 – 80 people joining these Zoom presentations. A very positive outcome of these talks, in a large part due to many people being isolated, has been the camaraderie of the group on Tuesdays; many of our members really look forward to getting together, even virtually, and regularly attend! And, since we record these sessions, we are developing yet another archive of information on enameling that we share with our community.
Other initiatives of TES include our grants program which has given over $100,000 to various art centers, schools and universities to start/expand an enameling program, to support master artists visits or to generally support awareness of enameling. For the past three years the Society has been co-operatively sponsoring an Artist-in-Residence program twice a year, spring in North Carolina and fall in Idaho. We also support students with scholarships to attend our Conferences; we typically support 8 – 12 students at a Conference by paying the registration fees plus meals and housing.
For over ten (15) years now the Society has been managed out of our Roswell, Georgia office. The office manages Society operations, finances, website, communication and social media postings. The office continues to function well in support of the Board of Trustees, Officers and membership.
TES believes all these actions have been instrumental in elevating enameling on a national, even international scale. And in an era of declining membership within numerous media, TES has been able to sustain and even realize increases in membership levels. The Enamelist Society, Inc. continues to work on meaningful ways to expand our programming in response to our members.
