This is a "hybrid" role. The employee will work in the office (Arlington, VA) Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
SUMMARY
NACD is the premier association for corporate directors and boards in the country, delivering education, insights, and services to advance strong governance among US corporations and the directors who serve them. In addition to the fundamental tenants of high-performing boards, our current work is deeply focused on technology, DEI, climate, human capital and leadership in the boardroom. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Content, the Editor-in-Chief position is a critical role to bring to life the importance of board governance through storytelling. The Editor-in-Chief helps to set and actualize our vision by directing the creation, editing, and production of storytelling content across all NACD platforms, including our digital experience. This senior position is responsible for setting the editorial direction of NACD platforms that include the Directorship magazine, online articles and the Board Vision podcast, and for ensuring their success, accuracy, and relevance to the governance community and the NACD membership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs editorial feel of the magazine, podcast and online content ; ensures that their evolution keeps pace with technology-driven trends in media & communications, and the changing readership habits or platforms of its member/readers.
Works with the SVP, Content and other key stakeholders to support overall NACD strategy and ensures our storytelling is firmly integrated with our overall content plan and PR/marketing activities.
Contributes actively to developing a distinct NACD voice on key governance matters, bringing creativity and boldness to how our ideas and viewpoints are communicated.
Works closely with our commercial partnership team to identify the right advertising and partner content opportunities that support the overall editorial objectives across our blogs, magazine, and podcasts.
Works with key stakeholders internally to ensure we profile the current and rising leaders in our board community, including NACD Directorship Certified™ directors.
Leads our approach, working closely with IT and other stakeholders, to optimize the digital version of the magazine and to keep the properties for which they are responsible ahead of the digital curve.
Represents NACD at external events and other director- and/or business-oriented programs and conferences as the public face of the magazine and NACD’s overall storytelling.
Participates in and attends outside conferences and events integral to the Editor-in-Chief’s ability to promote membership, seek contributors, solicit high-profile interview subjects, and inspire ideas and broader thinking about boardroom issues of the day.
Assigns, schedules, and produces all of the editorial content for each issue of the quarterly magazine, conceptualizing story ideas with staff editors and outside contributors, ensuring that high standards for the creation, production, and distribution of the magazine are met and deadlines are upheld.
Reports and writes cover-caliber stories in addition to the Editor’s Note.
Manages the editorial team, ensuring that they are adequately prepared to meet their responsibilities; setting clear goals and defining responsibilities for team members in the context of our organizational and editorial strategy; advancing professional development through constructive editing, coaching, delivering feedback, and designing career trajectories.
Attracts, develops, and retains editorial talent: focus on coaching junior staff and building career development plans.
Facilitates, moderates, and/or interviews, as needed, at member events.
Contributes to the nomination and selection process for NACD’s annual awards (D100) to celebrate exemplary board leadership.
Collaborates with colleagues as needed on program design for special events and to ensure proper deliverables and alignment of goals.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years of progressive leadership experience in journalism required. Experience with digital media, including podcast and video production, is a significant plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Demonstrable ability to develop and execute numerous story ideas and work with contributors and staff researchers, reporters, and writers to craft accurate and timely contributions to both the quarterly magazine and the web. Demonstrable ability to visualize the graphic elements essential to effective storytelling and the sourcing of such materials. Presentation and interviewing skills and comprehensive knowledge of print and web production required.
Ability to attract, manage, motivate, and mentor editorial staff is required. Experience developing and adhering to editorial budgets and contracts required.
Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and expertise with Adobe Creative Suite, writing for the web, and digital publishing required.

NACD employees are required to be fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus by their first day of employment. An employee is “fully vaccinated” two weeks after receiving their second dose of a two-dose vaccination series or two weeks after the first shot of a single-dose vaccine (or as described by the vaccine manufacturer).
The salary/hourly range for this position is $155,000-$165,000 plus bonus potential. Compensation is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.
