The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) and its philanthropic partner, the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (TVMF), are seeking a visionary leader to serve as their next Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This individual will lead one of the most respected and forward-thinking veterinary medical associations in the country, a nationally recognized leader among state VMAs for its innovation, advocacy, and impact.
The Association:
The mission of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association is to promote, advocate for and protect the veterinary medical profession and to advance animal health for the well-being of animals and humans.
The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) was organized in 1903 and continues to operate as a nonprofit organization under the laws of Texas. TVMA supports veterinarians as they practice the art and science of veterinary medicine in Texas. It is composed of approximately 5,400 licensed veterinarians, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT), Certified Veterinary Practice Managers (CVPM) and students across the state who utilize our products, programs, and services.
Today, TVMA is one of the largest state veterinary medical associations in the nation and is recognized for its leadership on important issues, innovative solutions, and effective representation. The excellence of its educational programs, publications and legislative efforts has fostered an outstanding reputation among veterinarians and sister associations across the country.
The TVMA is governed by a 33-member Board of Directors body responsible for setting the policy for association. The TVMA Executive Committee is a nine-member administrative body elected to carry out the policies, financial and property affairs.
The Foundation:
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation is committed to supporting the veterinary profession and our communities in Texas by providing resources, education, and programs for the responsible stewardship of animals.
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization in Texas that leverages veterinary partnerships and financial resources to support the veterinary profession by providing financial assistance in times of crisis, connecting veterinarians with opportunities to serve their communities, advocating responsible animal ownership and promoting and improving the well-being of animals.
The Foundation was established in 1978 as the philanthropic partner of the TVMA, is one of the largest state veterinary medical associations in the nation. TVMF and TVMA partner to advance animal health for the well-being of animals and humans and to promote the veterinary medical profession.
The TVMF Board of Trustees is a governing body of approximately 25 members responsible for establishing policies and directives governing business and programs of the Foundation.
The Executive Director acts as the chief administrative officer, executing the vision of both Boards, managing staff, and aligning daily operations with TVMA’s long-term strategic goals. This includes staff supervision, title establishment, and delegation of operational authority to ensure effective management.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Role of the Executive Director:
This position serves dual roles as both the Executive Director of TVMA and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TVMF.
The TVMA Executive Director is the chief administrative officer of TVMA and is responsible for all management functions. The Executive Director manages and directs all activities of TVMA as prescribed by the Executive Committee and is responsible to the Executive Committee. The position oversees the staff of approximately 17 individuals (including TVMF personnel) and is responsible for employing or terminating members of the staff necessary to carry on the work of TVMA and fixes their compensation with the approved budget. The Executive Director also defines the duties of staff, supervises their performance, establishes their titles, and delegates those responsibilities of management as shall be in the best interest of TVMA.
The Executive Director of TVMA has primary responsibility for day-to-day management of TVMA and its programs that include membership recruitment and retention, as well as benefits and services. The Executive Director provides oversight and assistance to the Government Relations Division which is charged with representing the Association before legislative and regulatory bodies. The position oversees the provision of continuing education opportunities for member and non-member veterinarians and serves as a member of the Southwest Veterinary Symposium’s Board of Managers which oversees a large regional CE meeting each year. In addition, the Executive Director provides oversight for compliance of the Veterinary Political Action Committee (VPAC).
As the Chief Executive Officer of TVMF the CEO’s principal role is ensuring that the Foundation and the Association work synergistically, executing their activities in a complimentary fashion. The CEO serves as a liaison between the TVMF Board of Trustees and the TVMA Board of Directors and TVMA Executive Committee.
The CEO has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the plans and purposes of the TVMF Board of Trustees are fulfilled, providing oversight and support to the TVMF Chief Operating Office who serves as the chief administrator of the Foundation.
TVMA has an annual budget of approximately $3.5 million, the majority of which is generated by membership dues, conference revenues and various forms of non-dues revenue. TVMA has total assets of approximately $8.1 million. VPAC has an annual budget of approximately $114,000 per year with nearly $600,000 in assets. The TVMF has an annual budget of over $720,000. TVMF has net assets of approximately $4.8 million.
The Executive Director position will include a significant amount of travel to attend conferences, meet with constituents and conduct the business of TVMA, TVMF and VPAC.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Successful candidates should have the following combination of experience and competencies:
Seven plus years of professional experience with increasing responsibility
Management experience with a budget of at least $2M
Responsibility for a staff of at least ten people
Experience working for a membership or trade association
Experience with public speaking and media relations
Experience working with a board or serving on a board
An understanding of Texas legislative and regulatory process
