This position is bonus eligible.
We currently follow a hybrid work structure with three days in-office (NYC-based) and two days remote.
Some travel within the U.S. to attend and support conferences is required.

Position Overview:
The Membership and Marketing Manager is a hybrid role that combines member operations with strategic marketing initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Membership and Marketing Officer, this position will be the primary point of contact for both prospective and current members, ensuring a high-quality member experience while also executing strategies to grow membership and increase engagement. The Membership and Marketing Manager will manage member onboarding, invoicing, renewals, reporting, and financial reconciliation while also contributing to marketing campaigns, member acquisition strategies, and community outreach efforts in collaboration with the Society’s staff and external partners.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized and responsive, detail-oriented, and capable of balancing day-to-day operational responsibilities with longer-term marketing and growth planning.
Key Responsibilities:
Membership Management and Engagement
Serves as the primary member service representative for all membership-related inquiries, providing exceptional support and fostering a strong sense of community.
Manages invoicing and renewals for new and returning members.
Actively promotes and reinforces the value of membership by ensuring members are aware of the full range of benefits, services and opportunities available to them.
Develops a deep understanding of the organization’s different member types and segments, and collaborate with internal teams to help tailor communications, resources, and engagement strategies that align with their specific needs and interests.
Collaborates internally to ensure members are appropriately categorized by their membership type.
Manages and monitors member access to online communities, ensuring timely and accurate permissions are granted and that members can easily participate in relevant discussion groups.
Membership Marketing
Contributes to the development and execution of targeted marketing campaigns aimed at recruiting new members and promoting membership benefits.
Identifies opportunities for membership growth based on member, behavior and data, member feedback, and leadership recommendations.
Helps align marketing messaging and campaign content with the priorities and pain points of key member segments to improve relevance and impact.
Leads outreach efforts for lapsed and at-risk members, including targeted re-engagement and re-join strategies.
Identifies opportunities to reinforce the member value proposition, highlight benefits, and build awareness of the Society’s impact among current and prospective members.
Member Insights and Personalization
Develops a strong understanding of the Society’s member categories/segments, including their professional roles, interests, and goals, to support more personalized engagement.
Uses member data and feedback to identify patterns, preferences, and evolving needs, helping to inform the development of relevant programs, content, and services.
Creates and maintains detailed member personas to guide marketing strategies, outreach efforts, and engagement planning.
Helps ensure that all touchpoints, including email communications, onboarding, renewals, event promotions, etc., feel personalized timely, and relevant to the recipient.
Financial Reconciliation and Membership Payments
Monitors incoming payments (ACH, wire transfers, etc.) daily, ensure accurate reconciliation of payments against invoices, and report back to relevant departments as necessary.
Accurately (and securely) manages the invoicing and processing of all membership dues, event registrations, and other member-related fees.
Provides support for reconciliation and financial reporting as directed to CFO.
Supports set-up processes by completing necessary forms and providing tax or organizational documentation as needed.
Database Management and Data Integrity
Maintains the accuracy and integrity of the membership database, including regular audits, updates, and cleanup processes.
Liaises with external partners to implement upgrades, troubleshoot issues, and optimize functionality.
Develops custom reports and queries to support both operational needs and marketing analysis.
Reporting and Analytics
Provides regular (weekly/monthly/quarterly as directed) financial exports and reports, ensuring revenue and payments are accurately tracked and reconciled.
Assists with preparations for the annual financial audit by organizing membership data, documentation and transaction records.
Tracks membership campaign and performance metrics to refine strategies and demonstrate ROI.
Strategic and Operational Contribution
Actively participates in the Society’s strategic and operational planning processes, contributing ideas, insights, and feedback to support long-term success.
Works with CMMO and others to develop and track execution of annual plans for membership acquisition and growth, onboarding, retention, and engagement.
Works with CMMO to develop, maintain, revise, and ensure adherence to written standard operating procedures to govern the Society’s membership activities, including database use, queries, reporting and member support functions, onboarding, invoicing, and others as needed.
Maintains awareness of key organizational priorities and external market developments and evolving practices, and collaborates across teams to help ensure sustained progress toward shared objectives and performance benchmarks.
Serves as a brand ambassador for the Society, upholding its values and mission in all interactions and communications, and promoting a positive, inclusive experience that supports member engagement and growth.
5+ years of experience in membership management, marketing, or customer engagement in a nonprofit, membership association environment.
Experience analyzing data to identify trends and drive decision-making.
Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Proficiency in CRM/database systems (iMIS preferred) and experience working with financial systems and reporting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate clearly across teams and with external partners.
Proactive, self-motivated, and strategic thinker with a member-first mindset.
