Executive Director Opportunity – International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Position managed by Association and Society Management International (ASMI)
Association and Society Management International (ASMI) is seeking an accomplished and mission-driven Account Executive to lead the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), a globally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the emergency management profession and supporting those who protect lives and property from disasters.
About the Role This is a rare opportunity for a senior association management professional to oversee a talented staff team of 12–14 employees and manage the operations of IAEM, a 501(c)(3) organization with 5,500 members and a $3 million annual budget. The successful candidate will serve as the chief executive responsible for delivering strategic leadership, ensuring operational excellence, maintaining fiscal health, and supporting a committed volunteer leadership structure. Communications strategy is a particular area of emphasis. The employee may lend talent to other ASMI clients as capability and efficiency warrant.
The Executive Director will be employed by ASMI, an experienced association management company that has provided executive and operational services to IAEM for over 40 years. The position is based at ASMI’s headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
Provide visionary leadership and executive oversight for all IAEM programs, services, and strategic initiatives.
Work closely with the IAEM Board of Directors and volunteer leaders to implement the organization’s mission and goals.
Manage financial performance, including budget preparation, monitoring, and reporting.
Supervise and develop a high-performing AMC staff team, fostering collaboration and accountability.
Represent IAEM to external stakeholders, partners, and the broader emergency management community.
Ensure compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, and reporting requirements.
Knowledge:The position requires communications expertise; knowledge of project planning and management; non-profit law; non-profit governance best practices; funding strategies; research and evaluation methods and techniques. Familiarity with adult learning concepts and with deployment of contemporary technology for non-profit operations are a bonus.
Skills:The position requires skills in marketing, relationship development and outreach. Employee must be extremely well-organized and task oriented. Outstanding written and oral communications skills are needed with success in member service. Ability to identify with the emergency management profession and IAEM mission.
Education and Experience:A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in appropriate area such as non-profit organization management, business, marketing or related is preferred. The ideal candidate has a background in emergency management and a history of managing non-profit membership organizations. All association staff are expected to participate in basic training specific to the client in order to foster an understanding of the members we serve.
Professional Credential: A Certified Association Executive is preferred.
