The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is looking for a dedicated Managing Editor to oversee the production and publication of two of our esteemed journals, the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine(TJACSM) and Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (ESSR).
As a Managing Editor, you will play a pivotal role in managing two journals and maintaining seamless communication with authors, reviewers, editors, and production personnel. This position is hybrid and only accepting applications from candidates who live in Indiana with priority given to those who live in the Indianapolis area.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary duties as managing editor of Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine and Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews include:
Serve as the primary point of contact for the editors-in-chief (EICs) to include assisting with journal administrative duties, planning compendia/issues (including any special sections/supplements and collections), coordinating article recruitment and serving as a liaison between the EICs and publisher
Process and format check all submitted articles
Maintain timelines for all compendia/issues by reminding authors, associate editors, and reviewers of deadlines
Assign new and revised manuscripts to EICs or section editors, process decisions for manuscripts and perform final format check on accepted manuscripts
Correspond with authors, reviewers, EICs, digital content editors, associate editors, and journal production editors as needed
Handle production preparation and edit proofs
Maintain and update features on the journals’ web sites
Communicate details for each issue to the marketing and communications team for promotion in the Bulletin, on social media, and via other ACSM venues
Maintain procedures documentation and instructions for authors
Maintain lists of associate editors and editorial board members, including periodic working with the EIC to periodically review the team’s progress, rolling members off the boards, and inviting new members
Respond to general inquiries
Primary duties for other publications include:
Assist on book and journal projects as requested
Attend ACSM Annual Meeting as requested Maintain a rigorous focus on meeting member needs and creating a valuable member experience.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge:
Standard software programs (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel)
Knowledge or experience with iThenticate is preferred
Skills:
Periodicals production
Scientific, technical, medical writing and editing

Oral and written communication
Time management
Desire and ability to operate as a team player both on core team and across the organization.
Organized, detail oriented, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changes.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism (or related field)
PREFERENCES: Bachelor’s degree in journalism with five (5) years of scientific publishing experience
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Attends ACSM meetings as required
Maintains current license, certification, or registration as applicable
Follows dress code policy
Adheres to attendance/scheduling policies
Demonstrates flexibility in participating in staffing needs
