The Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), formerly the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) represents more than 1,700 companies in the U.S. and around the globe who play a critical part in providing recycled materials to America’s manufacturing industries. Based in Washington, D.C., we promote safe, economically sustainable, and environmentally responsible recycling through education, networking, and advocacy.
The Vice President, Membership (VPM) is responsible for setting and executing the organization’s membership strategy with a focus on growth, retention, engagement, and value delivery. This role leads a five-person team and works cross-functionally with departments to ensure the member experience is impactful and aligned with the organization’s mission.
The VPM is a proactive, strategic thinker who is passionate about delivering value to members, modeling ethical leadership, and empowering staff to achieve high performance. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable developing high-level strategy and diving into operational execution.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Sets the vision and goals for membership growth, renewal, and retention efforts.
Designs and executes member acquisition and engagement strategies informed by data analytics and market intelligence.
Coaches, mentors and supervises a professional team to create a culture of excellence, accountability, and professional development.
Develops and implements campaigns and lead-generation activities targeting key industry sectors.
Monitors membership trends and recommends adjustments to strategy based on evolving needs.
Ensures membership practices reflect the organization’s values of ethical business conduct, inclusion, and transparency.
Partners with other departments to align messaging and programming with membership priorities.
Oversees content for the membership section of the association’s website and CRM system.
Collaborates with Finance and Operations to ensure accurate and timely dues billing, reporting, and member data integrity.
Creates individualized development plans, promote cross-training, and identifies stretch opportunities to grow internal talent.
Preferred Education / Skills
Bachelor’s degree required; CAE certification or advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of ten years of relevant experience, including at least five years in a senior membership or business development leadership role.
Strong leadership and mentoring experience, with the ability to motivate and retain high-performing teams.
Proven track record of membership growth and program development in a trade association or member-based organization.
Able to win and maintain the credibility and respect of an effective and impactful board and other volunteer Association leaders.
Familiarity with the recycling industry or other industrial trade associations strongly preferred.
Thrives in environments requiring the ability to effectively prioritize and juggle concurrent projects from conception to completion.
Expertise in CRM/AMS systems (NetForum preferred) and Microsoft Office 365.
Excellent communication and strategic planning skills.
Experience developing and managing budgets, analyzing performance data, and creating actionable insights.
Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
Working Conditions
Salary range for this position is between $160k - $185k.
Travel is expected (20-35%) for chapter meetings, job site tours, and national events.
This position operates in a professional office environment. While traveling to tour job sites, you could be exposed to general hazards that accompany recycling plant.
