The Senior Director will track and report on state legislation and law, develop talking points and other advocacy materials on policy trends, engage with national state policy organizations and third-party groups, and coordinate ABA policy priorities from across the organization.
The successful candidate will be a seasoned public policy professional with a deep understanding of the state and federal policymaking process, have a track record of bipartisan coalition building, and be able to identify national overlays to state-focused policy matters and communicate those to both internal and external stakeholders.
The Senior Director will work at the intersection of state policy and third-party advocacy.
Key responsibilities:
• Co-Lead ABA’s Working Group on State Issues (WGSI): The Senior Director will serve as a co-lead of ABA’s Working Group on State Issues, a member-driven working group of government relations, legal, and state policy professionals from member banks, state associations, and across the ABA. This role will identify, track, and report on priority state initiatives impacting the banking industry.
• Drive strategy through member engagement: ABA is a member-driven organization proudly representing institutions of all asset sizes and charter types. The Senior Director will engage with members through in-person events around the country. They will be responsible for responding to inquiries from ABA members on questions about state legislation and state law.
• Build coalitions and interface with external stakeholders: A critical component of our advocacy campaigns involves updating external stakeholders on our efforts and partnering on various initiatives. The Senior Director will monitor, engage, and shape the activities of national state policy organizations by informing policy debates, engaging working groups, and drafting comment letters.
Requirements:

• Exceptional communications skills and ability to build relationships with multiple stakeholders across multiple mediums, including in-person and virtual briefings.
• Ability and willingness to travel (10 – 20%).

American Bankers Association (ABA) is an Equal Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, protected Veteran status, personal appearance, political affiliation, family responsibilities, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
The American Bankers Association is the united voice of America’s hometown bankers—small, regional and large banks that together employ more than 2 million women and men, hold nearly $17 trillion in assets, safeguard $12.8 trillion in deposits and extend more than $9 trillion in loans. ABA believes that government policies should recognize the industry’s diversity. Laws and regulations should be tailored to correspond to a bank’s charter, business model, hometown markets and risk profile. This policymaking approach avoids the negative economic consequences of burdensome, unsuitable and inefficient bank regulation. Through a broad array of information, training, staff expertise and other resources, ABA supports America’s hometown bankers as they perform their critical role as drivers of America’s economic growth and job creation.
