The National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer. This is a unique opportunity to support the President and Board of Directors (the Board) and co-lead with the Chief Policy Officer to develop and implement organizational objectives.
Founded in 1979, NABL exists to promote the importance and integrity of the municipal market by advancing the understanding of, and compliance with, the law affecting public finance.
The Chief Operating Officer is involved at all stages of strategic planning across the organization. Guided by NABL’s mission and based on the NABL Board’s communicated goals, objectives, and direction, the Chief Operating Officer will provide the leadership, management, and oversight necessary to ensure that the organization has strong planning and operational procedures, proper financial controls, effective administrative and reporting procedures, and proper human resource systems in place to accomplish the organization’s mission and meet its financial and operational goals and metrics.
This individual will be based in Washington, D.C.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
Coordinating strategic targets and driving NABL’s organizational growth.
Translating strategy into actionable steps for growth.
Overseeing operations and employee productivity.
Building a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and NABL meets its organizational goals.
Working with the Board Treasurer, the Board Finance Committee, and NABL staff to prepare a comprehensive annual budget and long-term financial plans for Board review and approval.
Implementing organization-wide business planning, goal setting, and performance management.
Proactively mitigating business, governance, and operational risks by interpreting data and metrics and establishing policies that promote NABL’s culture and vision.
Reviewing and approving departmental work plans and staffing.
Serving as Executive Director of the Robert H. Hilderbrand, Jr. Fund, NABL’s 501(c)(3) education and scholarship fund.
Managing a team comprised of a Director of Operations, Director of Communications, Conference Manager, other staff, and outside consultants.
Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
An undergraduate degree from an accredited school is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
A minimum of 15 years of overall professional experience combined with an executive-level background, including a minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience.
Minimum of 7 years of operational leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a non-profit 501(c)(6) organization.
Financial acuity and political astuteness, with the ability to set clear priorities, delegate tasks, and guide investment in people and systems.
Strong business acumen and the ability to set financial strategy, targets, and growth strategies.
Experience with operational and financial board reporting.
Experience with creating and implementing one or more strategic plans while in a leadership position.
Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
