The American Academy of Periodontology was founded in 1914 by two women, Drs. Gillette Hayden and Grace Roger Spalding. It was initially named the American Academy of Oral Prophylaxis and Periodontology and began with 18 charter members. The name was changed to the American Academy of Periodontology in 1919. Today, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has a membership of approximately 8,200. The AAP is housed in 14,000 square feet of space at 737 N. Michigan, directly next door to the American Dental Association.

Primary Purpose:
The Coordinator, Member Programs and Communications supports the Member Programs and Communications department by assisting with various strategic and administrative projects that provide member value and engagement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Member Programs (70%):
Provide support for the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative (Dental Hygiene Study Club, Dental Hygienist Recognition Program, and the Dental Hygiene Symposium), including customer service (responding to phone calls and email), content development assistance, and administrative support.
Help administer the ARRive resident retreat registration process and assist in general event preparation.
Support member recruitment and retention programs (e.g., International Member Recognition Program, Member Loyalty Program, Residency Engagement Program) and assist in administration and fulfillment of deliverables.
Aid in the various components of the Leadership, Engagement, Action, and Development (LEAD) Program including the nomination process, event logistics, onsite support, and post-event activities.
Coordinate advocacy efforts including tracking sign-on letters, recording volunteer efforts in other organizations, and assisting with related communications.
Provide support for onsite and online events for the Dental Specialty Group and the ADA House of Delegates events.
Support the management of AAP Connect, the online membership community, by monitoring the AAP Connect inbox, participating in monthly check-ins with the Community Advisor, and supporting administration of District communities.
Provide assistance with the Perio Perks affinity program as requested.
Administration (30%):
Support departmental committees and other volunteer groups (e.g. Strategic Planning Committee, ADA Liaison Committee, Membership Sustainability and Growth Committee, Dental Hygiene Subcommittee, LEAD Program Selection Committee, the AAP Connect Workgroup, and Resident Retreat Workgroup) by scheduling meetings, coordinating meeting logistics, preparing agendas, taking and distributing meeting minutes, etc.).
Collects input from other departments to inform updates to the monthly Strategic Initiative Tracker.
Assist the Deputy Executive Director with scheduling meetings and general calendar management.
Process expense reports for the Deputy Executive Director.
Provide additional general administrative assistance to the department as needed, including research, correspondence, and project tracking.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S) from a four-year college or university in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field required.
Experience working in a membership association preferred.
Communications Ability:
Strong-to-superior writing, proofreading, and editing skills required.
A commitment to providing excellent customer service to members.
Ability to confidently and proficiently communicate with staff and volunteers at all levels required.
Computer/Digital Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
Experience in Freestone, Smartsheet, and Personify 360 preferred.
Other:
Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and across multiple staff teams.
Commitment to adhering to stringent production schedules required.
Superb organizational skills and sound decision-making ability required.
